Early Season Recap:

Racing with the True Value Modifieds has been great.  Our finishes haven't been the greatest but there is a scence that the first top 10 is right around the corner.  Thunder Road was an awesome experience and a fun track to race on.  The car really came on at the end of the race.  Waterford was challenging as we missed on setup a bit but we made it to the finish.  Monadnock was a racy little track and I had fun mixing it up with the other rookies.  All in all - we've been having fun this year.

Racing at Thompson brought back memories of last season.  Wrecked out early during the Ice Breaker and dropped a cylinder in the opening Thursday night feature.  Looks like it's time to make our own luck!  We'll be visiting Thompson and Stafford as our schedule permits so keep an eye out and we'll see you at the track.

Next race:  True Value Modifieds at Seekonk on Saturday, June 14th.

SpeedwayExpo '08 - A great weekend as always.  Unfortunately, I was unable to attend on Saturday and missed out on all the great seminars that were scheduled.  Anyone take notes? lol  I did attend on Sunday and had the pleasure of participating in the "Fastest Women in the Northeast" round table discussion.  It was a great experience and there were some really good questions.  The family held back, though my dad was itching to ask what it was like to race against your dad and wreck him?  Well, it stinks.  It means that you have two cars to fix instead of just one.  And it really stinks when it happens in practice the night before 9 consecutive nights of racing.  And yes, that is how we started our 2008 season.

APE Motorsports headed south for the 42nd World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.  It was a week among friends and we had a great time.  Special thanks to Dave, Don, CJ and the entire Zacharias crew for all their help.  We wouldn't have been able to do it without you.

APE Motorsports SK Modifieds #76 and #96 Racing at New Smyrna Recap:

Thursday, 2/7 - Practice went well until the last round.  I was trying to get out of the way of a tour car in the sk practice and I got too high off of two, got loose and lost the tail of the car.  My left front was torn off as the car turned down.  Imagine my horror when I saw what car had hit me.  Dad.  His right front was all torn off and he had some damage down the right side of the car.  Not exactly how we wanted to start the season.

Friday, 2/8 - The crew worked hard to get both cars back together and we were back in business for night 1 time trials.  Dad qualified 9th with a 18.344 and I had 10th with an 18.488.  We had a long wait due to a crazy late model feature but finally got on the track to race.  There was one caution in our race and that was what I needed to get by dad.  I finished 9th with dad right behind me in 10th.

Saturday, 2/9 - More troubles in practice.  My engine started breaking up and I brought the car in and parked it.  It was handling really well but I knew something was wrong with the motor.  We found a rocker with a broken pin that had bent a valve.  The crew didn't give up though and changed engines in time for the feature.  I had a good run and was able to make some outside passes to finish in 7th with dad in 9th.

Sunday, 2/10 - A scheduled night off doesn't mean a day off.  In the constant search for more power, the crew changed the intake on my car.  They also fixed the clutch and brakes on dad's tour car.  I had driven it Saturday night to start the race and thought I had hit the wrong pedal going into the turn.  There was barely any brakes in the car.  Dad hadn't mentioned it before because he thought the crew had enough to work on.

Monday, 2/11 - New saying, it's better that stuff happens in a practice than during a race.  There was no warning this time.  My engine blew going into the turn.  Oil was everywhere.  All over the car, my helmet, my suit.  It was a mess.  I did spin in my own oil and luckily kept it off the wall otherwise we would have had a lot more work to do.  The crew pulled off another massive effort and was able to take a valve from the blown engine to fix the primary engine and had the car ready for the feature.  Dad and I both started at the back because we had missed time trials.  He was able to get by me on the start and we finished 11th and 12th.

Tuesday, 2/12 - The rain gave us an unscheduled night off.

Wednesday, 2/13 - A few rain showers delayed practice but we still got some in.  Dad qualified 8th with an 18.2 and I was right behind in 9th with an 18.3.  I had a good start, fresh tires, and a car that would break up off the turn.  We were able to figure out what the breaking up was.  Lack of fuel kept me from finishing the race.

Thursday, 2/14 - Valentine's Day saw an increase in speed for both cars.  I qualified in 9th with an 18.171 and dad was 10th with an 18.173.  There was a lot of contact on starts and restarts.  My rear bumper definitely took a beating and that was under caution.  Dad had a good night and finished in 5th and I followed Jimmy Z. across the line for 7th.

Friday, 2/15 - I had a loose car for practice and proved it during qualifying.  I really went for it and ended up spinning off of four coming to the white flag.  I knew I needed to back up so I could get some momentum back before starting my 2nd lap.  I just didn't back up enough and ended up with a 13th place starting spot.  Dad qualified 7th with a 17.8.  I had a good start in the feature and was able to make some passes.  I also made it through a wreck in turn four and was scored in 5th place.  It was a fight to get in line but they finally got the message and let me in.  I was racing with Billy Anderson for 4th.  I was looking outside and inside and he was just too wide to get by.  With two laps to go, the 09 got by me on the inside and went after Anderson.  Coming to the checkers, they got together and I headed to the bottom of the track and crossed the line while Anderson came across the track and just barely got into my right rear.  I was able to keep the car straight and thought I had gotten by him for 4th.  With no photo finish for 4th, two out of three scorers marked Anderson in the spot and I was credited with a 5th place finish.  I finally made the top 5.  I was pretty happy.  Dad had some troubles and ended up with a 10th place finish.

Saturday, 2/16 - On Friday, Norm asked what it would take to be in better contention for a win.  My response was tires and a better starting spot.  Well, I got the tires and the best starting spot you can get.  I turned a 17.663 for the last time trial of the week which was 6th fastest and the last spot for the redraw.  No one pulled the pole and it was left for me.  Jimmy Blewett had fast time with a 17.3.. but everyone else was within a tenth of each other.  Jimmy had pulled the 2nd starting spot and I wasn't too surprised when he beat me into the first turn.  The 60 was able to get by me for 2nd and I moved up to the highside for 3rd.  I was having a really good run going and was working on a top 3 finish when the 20 started working on my rear bumper.  He got a few good hits in, one of which broke my mirrror.  My car started getting loose as well and on Lap 18, it came out from under me off of two.  The left front was hit and we broke a tyrod and lower control arm relegating me to a 12th place finish and 8th in points for the series.  Dad ended the week with a 4th place finish and passed me for 7th in points by only 2 points.  And he's been enjoying his bragging rights ever since!

Overall, the week was a success.  We improved every night and Dad and I had a lot of fun racing each other.

APE Motorsports Tour Modified #96 Racing at New Smyrna Highlights:

Saturday, 2/9 - After rolling and folding 2 blankets and a sweatshirt, I was able to reach the pedals so I could start the tour modified race.  I pulled off when I got lapped to keep the car in one piece.  I matched dad's finish of the night before - 15th.

Monday, 2/11 - Dad can now say he raced against Kyle Bush and beat him.

Friday, 2/15 - Dad gave the crew some pitting practice during the 100 lapper.  Everyone had a good time changing tires and making adjustments.  He came out of it with a 12th place finish.

Next up on the racing agenda:

Practice at Monadnock with the TVMRS Mod on 4/5/08

Thompson's ICEBREAKER 4/4-6/08

See you at the track!

A Look Back at 2007

Have you ever watched the super modifieds at Thompson from the backstretch?  If you blink, you miss them go by.  Well, I blinked and the same thing happened to the 2007 season.  It passed by and now I have to try to think back to what happened.  Here's a brief glimpse back at the 2007 season.

It was a great year for APE powered machines!

Congratulations are in order for:

Mike Romano, 2007 Mini Stock Champion at TIS with 5 Wins

Brad Caddick, 2nd in Mini Stock points at TIS with 3 Wins

Kyle James, 1st Feature Win at Wateford

APE Motorsports had a challenging season:

We raced, we wrecked, we learned.  2007 was all about learning for me.  I started the year by attending the Finish Line Racing School in New Smyrna, FL.  The lessons continued throughout the year with my fellow sk competitors really schooling me.  Our sk modified season can be summed up as follows:  A few mistakes, some good runs, a lot of races with finishes that didn't show how well we ran, and a lot of bad luck.  And - I learned how to shift without a clutch.  I was able to start four True Value Modified Racing Series features.  Waterford was a good experience, we barely made the start of the race at Thompson due to a clutch change but finished well, Seekonk was my favorite (new track and I had to fight to qualify, which I did.  I ran well and made some good passes on the outside but used up my tires in the process and faded at the end of the race.), and Lee which was a tough weekend as the car wouldn't stay running due to an electrical issue and I was the first car out.

We did end the season on a high note with a top 5 run at Wall Township Speedway's Turkey Derby with Tim Arre behind the wheel of Butch's # 96 ROC Modified.  It was dad's first time racing at Wall and he asked Tim to hop in to qualify the car and decided that Tim could get us a great finish which he did.  Special thanks to Tim Arre for giving us some steam to get through the off season.

And now, after having a little time to catch our breaths and to think about 2008, we can announce a few of our plans.  APE Motorsports will be concentrating on running the full season with the Modified Racing Series.  We will also be racing at the 42nd World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing in New Smyrna, FL in February.  The calendar has been updated with all modified racing events, motorsports events and trade shows.  Keep checking for updates throughout the season.

The 2007 Season has officially begun!
The Bud Nationals brewed at the new WSB.
The ice melted at the TIS Ice Breaker.
And the racing heated up at the SMS Sizzler.

APE Motorsports started the season attempting to qualify the 76 Sk modified (a red Raceworks car) at the Bud Nats on March 31.  We were late getting to the track (imagine that! ) and I drew a top five for the time trial order.  We went over the pad and were not allowed to adjust the tire pressures.  Green, white, checker and time trial was over.  I had qualified - for the consi race where I finished right behind the last qualified car.  We did have some mechanical problems - the shifter jumped out of gear, the power steering was leaking and we blew a gasket in the water pump making it difficult for me to see getting into the pit area after the race with lots of steam coming out.  Even with all that, I almost got the spot!  Big thank you to Tom Fox.  Not only is he a great driver, he's an awesome spotter as well.

TIS Ice Breaker
Round 1, April 14 - We were late getting to the track (sound familiar?) but we were able to squeeze into the end of the last practice before the heat race with the 76 Sunoco modified (my Sk light converted).  I quickly found out that the shifter jumped out of gear.  Luckily it was an easy fix - the boot around the shifter was snapped too tight.  We undid the snaps and had no more problems.  Tiger figured this one out for us, thank you!  The heat race was just another practice for me.  The Sunoco mod is just a bit different from a mini-stock.  I love it.  The feature went pretty quick and I ended the race in 16th.

Round 2, April 22 - We were late getting to the track (see a habit forming?).  With cars being allowed to add to the field, the 96 Sunoco mod (a white Raceworks car) made its debut.  I made it out for the practice but Butch was busy mounting tires for his car.  The feature was a wild one with lots of cautions.  Butch kept the pit crew busy making adjustments and we both kept out of trouble.  On a restart towards the end of the race, Butch took a look on the inside of me but couldn't make the pass with a tight car.  I was able to pull away under green and beat him to the line for 11th.  It was a good first outing for us, racing together at the Big T.  I'm looking forward to the opening Thursday night.  We didn't have time to get my Thompson car done so I ran the car I'll be running at Stafford all year.  We should be ready for the opening Thursday night though.

SMS Spring Sizzler, April 29
We were late getting to the track - just the team though.  Butch was able to drop the truck and trailer off on Friday.  With practice scrubbed, we weren't in too bad a shape.  We actually made the practice the week before and knew what we had and what we needed to work on.  The 76 Sk modified wasn't too bad.  We fought the handling on the car all weekend.  Butch drew my starting spot for the heat and I found myself starting on the pole in the first heat!  Thanks, Dad!   I learned a lot in that heat race.  The competition is intense with less than 5 tenths of a second separating most of the field.  Not enough of a difference to complete a pass on the outside so the inside is the place to be.  The talented and experienced drivers around me steered me to the outside without turning me around so it worked out okay.  I started the 21 feature in 13th.  I made it to 10th when a caution came out putting me in 9th.  Only nine cars would qualify and it was a rough restart.  I held my own though and finished in the last qualified spot.  I had heard rumors about making a show at Stafford being more stressful than the race itself.  It was definitely intense.  There were some big names in the 21 feature and there are at least 15 cars that can win on any given night.  We definitely have some work to do.

Sunday was an awesome day.  I loved the pit party and getting to meet and see everyone again.  It was the perfect opener to my first Sk modified feature at Stafford.  I can't thank everyone enough for all their support. The highlight of the pit party for me was when Shawna Winters stopped by.  Shawna competed in her first race ever on Saturday, April 28 at Silver City and WON!  (Click for pic) Congratulations, Shawna!  Awesome job.
I wish I could say the same for my first Sk modified race at SMS. lol  The feature was full of cautions and close calls.  The first few cautions helped me quite a bit as we quickly found out I had dialed too much rear brake into the car.  I spun right around after hitting the brakes to miss the accidents.  One close call came between turns one and two and I really don't know how I made it through without catching the right front.  It was this )( close.  We had a long green run towards the end of the race and I tried to get a little too much out of my car.  I was fighting a loose off condition and with ten laps to go, I walloped the back stretch wall, rode it for a brief second and then was able to steer off and drive gingerly down into turn three.  The tires stayed up and I was able to finish out the race in the 15th position.  I wanted a top 10 of course but I was happy with the run.  I did bend both right side rims but all in all, the car is in one piece and we can focus on improving rather than repairing.  The finishing order was changed due to a disqualification so my official finishing position was 14th.

Special thanks to everyone that has helped us kick off the 2007 season.  We couldn't have done it without you.

Next up for APE Motorsports:  Friday night opener at SMS.  See you there!

02/26/07

Vacation - a time to relax, take it easy, have a rest and put your feet up.  APE Motorsports definition of vacation: drive 1,200 miles to New Smyrna Speedway's 41st Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing for 9 nights of racing with two sk modifieds and two tour-type modifieds.  The modifieds did have Sunday off and we were there for practice.  For me, it was all about having fun and getting seat time over 600 laps between practices and features for two divisions.  Where else could I get that kind of seat time before the season starts?

There was some tough competition at NSS this year and we were a bit behind in terms of equipment and resources.  As a team though, we improved each night and dad & I had a lot of fun racing each other.  We wouldn't have survived without a lot of help.  Special thanks to the crew that made it possible:  Norm-crew chief extraordinaire, Don, Rich, Janine, Nick, Peter, Kyle, Joe, Russ, Spencer and the Zacharias Team.  And MOM (mom had a lot of fun spotting for me).

When you have four cars, things can get confusing.  We had a lot of laughs throughout the week.  My favorite: I had just come in from a practice in my tour mod and I was still in the car.  Janine, our data acquisition expert, was taking tire temps on dad's car before moving over to take mine.  Well, she stopped one car short at my sk and was looking at the right front tire temp thinking 68 degrees can't be right, then she heard me laughing....

The highlight of the week for me was the Richie Evans Memorial 100 lapper.  It was an incredible treat to be part of such a great event.  It was also my first experience with outside driver introductions.  I'll remember the moments forever, waiting for my name to be called while standing among a great group of drivers before the start of a race memorializing one of the greatest drivers of all time.  The race itself was my best of the week.  I used the longer distance to settle into a rhythm and felt comfortable with the car and the track.  When I saw the checkered flag, I couldn't believe it.  It felt like the race had just started.  I was very happy with a 12th place finish and staying on the lead lap.

When we weren't at the race track, we were either sleeping or eating.  With the modifieds not on the schedule for Sunday night, we visited our favorite Italian restaurant Marios.  The food and service was excellent as always.  We had some good company to.  Did mom really squirt Terry and Tom with a water gun?  At the table?  Yes, she did.  We also enjoyed post race activities at Gilly's Pub 44.  With a kitchen open to 2am and the night's races playing on the screens, it was the place to be.  We didn't lack for food at the track either.  Janine and Rich were the team nutritionists and kept everyone fed on race day.  Janine even broke out the fried oreos on the last day.  Norm was smiling.

A familiar face from the north made the trip south to cheer us on and hooked us up with some delicious home-baked cookies.  Thank you, Cubby!

We made some great memories once again and can't wait until next year to return to New Smyrna.

Next up for APE Motorsports: stop by and see us at the Speedway EXPO, March 2-4 Springfield, MA.

01/30/07

Friday night was one for the memory books.  Thompson's awards banquet was a great time and we enjoyed seeing many friends.  It was such an honor to share the night with two great champions, Jeff Zuidema and Larry Barnett.  These drivers know how to have fun on and off the track.

In addition to a beautiful trophy (that is taller than me when I'm barefoot), Trevor Nickel put together an awesome collage of photos to commemorate the 2006 season.  Thank you, Trevor!!

Next up for APE Motorsports:  It's hard to believe the the 2007 racing season is already upon us.  New Smyrna Speedway's World Series of Asphalt Racing begins on February 9, less than 2 weeks away.  The track is slick with fresh pavement and I can't wait to test the new skills I'm learning on the modified.

12/04/06

APE Motorsports celebrated the 2006 SK Light Modified Championship at the Stafford Banquet on November 17, 2006.  We were the first guests to arrive.  It was perfect for photos and we took advantage of the empty lobby.  Dinner was excellent, everyone looked great and the awards were handed out with flair.  I'm still in awe of being selected the most popular sk light driver.  I love racing and a big part of that for me is the support of the fans.  I'm a fan to and its just incredible to be on the receiving end of so much support.  It was a wonderful surprise on such a special night.  Another special moment was being able to express how much my family and racing mean to me.  I put a lot of thought and heart into my speech and from the tears I saw in my family's eyes and felt in my own, I know I succeeded.  It was an incredible moment that we will treasure forever.

After such an awesome night, it was incredibly hard to get up early and head to NJ but we did.  We took the sk light down to Wall Speedway to practice in preparation for the Turkey Derby.  A desperately needed practice.  The car felt like a completely different beast.  Instead of nice wide tires, we had to switch to 8 inch hoosiers.  Talk about crazy loose.  And, the car always tends to be on the loose side to begin with.  My first time on the track was goofy as well.  I accidentally got sent out with the regular SKs instead of the MAD division.  They were eating me up like crazy and it was all I could do to stay out of the way.  After that, I sought some advice.  John Blewett III gave me some pointers and the next practice went a lot better.  We came away from the day with a good feel of the track and what the car needed to be competitive.

Turkey Derby was a great experience.  Wall is the smallest track I've raced on and it was good to get some seat time on such a tough little bull ring.  We had two feature races and I finished 6th in the first and 3rd in the second.  We drew for position for the first feature and I drew lucky number 28 out of 28, though there were only 10 cars.  A few cars dropped back so I did pick up a few spots prior to the initial green and then some guys got together and the caution came out.  I restarted in 4th with only one lap complete.  Wall is a very tough track to pass on.  I tried the bottom but there was no room.  Every time I got my nose in, it just wasn't in enough to prevent the guy chopping down.  Everyone just freight trained it on the bottom.  I tried to make a move to the outside and got a tiny bit too high and lost a couple spots.  So I ended up finishing 6th.  This put us in good position for the second feature.  I ended up starting on the pole.  On the first lap, I misjudged where the 00 left rear was in comparison to my right front and I got into him a bit.  He turned sideways and I was right into the side of him.  I thought I held the bottom line but I must have come up a bit and maybe he came down a little.  Anyways, it was a racing accident, nothing intentional and we were both able to finish the race.  I had to make a pit stop to pick up the front nose and check things over.  The crew got me back out on the lead lap and we were able to make it to third.  Not a bad finish to the weekend or the season.

Next up for APE Motorsports will be the Thompson Awards Banquet in January 2007.

Congratulations Shawna on your first ride in a quarter midget!

11/07/06

Stafford Fall Final Results:  A four way tie in the SK Light division and a wait of four weeks gave Norm lots of incentive and time to go over every little detail on the car.  And guess what?  The championship was all about paying attention to the details.  Dad, Norm, George, Dick and Peter spent some time with the guys at On Demand Performance in Westerly, RI to get the SK Light tuned up for its final run.  The hard work paid off and we posted our fastest lap of the season 19.824 during practice on Friday, October 27.  I started the feature with a lot of confidence and a great starting spot.  But unlike my beautiful black RE car that loved the outside groove, the pumpkin orange CD car wasn't hooked up for the outside which enabled a few cars to get by and I slipped to 5th.  The race went green to checker and I finished in 5th.  With one championship contender finishing in 2nd, another in 6th and one on his honeymoon, I was okay with my unofficial 2nd place points finish, especially considering that after I had broken my wrist, I was just hoping to finish in the top 5 in points.  Here's where the attention to details comes into play.  Norm's great when it comes to details.  In fact, he drives me nuts making me read the rule book over and over again.  With a four week wait and a shot at the championship, he made sure that the car was 100% within the rules.  So when the 70 sk light was disqualified for non-compliant brake components and we were requested to put our car in tech for the championship, I had complete faith the car would pass.  And we did.  We are the Inaugural 2006 Stafford SK Light Champions.  I don't think I'll really believe it until November 17 at the banquet.  Our celebration in victory lane was a little late but well worth the wait.  I was so glad everyone was able to stay until the lights came back on and the pictures were taken.  It was a very special moment and to have our racing family and friends with us was extra special.  We ended the season with 1 win, 10 top 5 finishes and a perfect score of 17 top 10 finishes.  We couldn't have done it without the support of Paul & Lori French and Cliff Nelson Motorsports, as well as the contingency bonuses from Sunoco Race Fuels and Bosch Platinum Spark Plugs.

Racing in November?  Oh yeah.  APE Motorsports just returned from Concord Motorsports Park.  The North-South Shootout was this past Saturday and we couldn't resist the chance to race at a new track with the SK Light.  If you were in NC, you would have heard me say, "Im going to need a psychiatrist when I get home because this track is INSANE!"  I mean, who in their right mind would hold the throttle wide open through a dog leg on a short track?  There's proof right there that no race car driver is in their right mind. :-)  When we first got to the track, I took a look and thought, "Uh oh, what kind of line do they run here?"  I can't thank Brian McCarthy enough for walking around the track with me.  If not for him, I definitely would have spent a lot of practice time searching for the line to get around the track instead of dialing the car in.  Brian definitely got us off to a great start.  Glen Reen, #17 and I represented Stafford well with lap times faster than a lot of the SKs.  Unfortunately, Glen broke a timing chain in the heat race and was unable to start the feature after working on the car until 7am.  We didn't get a chance to do pics but I really enjoyed the camaraderie we shared and I definitely owe Glen for showing me a fast way off of turn 4.  Turn 4 was the most challenging for me and bit me a few times in the feature.  Yes, I was responsible for three cautions with turn four being the scene of the crime.  The first was with some help from a fellow competitor.  I tried to hold on but was hit hard enough where it just wasn't going to happen and around I went.  At least he hit the quarter that came pre-wrinkled with the car.  The second caution occurred when I was looking low for 2nd and the door was closed.  I checked up to avoid getting into him and went around, again.  Lastly, I was running in 2nd and was trying to catch the leader.  It looked like I was gaining on him but I was running out of laps.  I gave it my all and tried to get too much coming out of four and went around all by myself.  So with a green-white-checker finish to be completed, I restarted in 3rd and was able to make a move on the outside off of four on the last lap to grab 2nd.  (I should have tried that earlier was the general opinion.)  After the exciting finish and going over the scales, I found out that I had won the SK Light portion of the race and got to go to victory lane.  The track and the people were awesome and we had a great time.  We're already looking forward to running again next year.

Next up for APE Motorsports:  Wall, Turkey Derby.  Why not?

10/17/06

World Series weekend at Thompson is always a good time and this year was no different.  I enjoyed the weekend as a spectator and spotter as I made the decision not to race.  My wrist is still in a cast and on the mend and I didn't want to take a chance with Stafford and a shot at another title only two weeks away.  With extra time on their hands, Norm and Butch got a Sunoco mod together to go racing.  Ricky dropped his old car off on Monday and after three days and nights of putting in the engine, transmission, fuel cell and lines, power steering, front brake rotors, calipers and brake pads all around, the car was ready for practice.  Brake issues on Friday and Saturday dominated Butch's practice runs but were worked out in time for the heat race.  After starting 11th, Butch was able to get to 7th with the car pushing on entry and center then snapping loose on exit.  Sounds exciting, doesn't it?  Let's just say some adjustments were needed.  Sunday morning came early after a night spent having fun at the clubhouse and around the camp fire.  Norm and Pete woke up early and went right to work on the car.  Adjustments were made to the brakes, wedge and cam to get as much out of the car as they could for the feature.  Butch started 21st and was fighting for room around 15th when his right front tire connected with another car's left rear tire.  He went into the air and gravity brought him down quickly.  The oil pan did not survive the impact and the right front tie-rod was broken.  It was a short run for the 76 but spirits were high due to the fact that the changes made dropped the lap times by 1.5 seconds.  Special thanks to Rich, Dick and Pete for all their help this weekend.

Next up for APE Motorsports - Plans are in the works for a trip north to Lee, NH for the final TVMS race of the year.

10/02/06

We did it – we are the 2006 Thompson Mini Stock Champions!

I was in awe of the cheers from the fans.  It was an amazing moment that I will remember forever.  It was a dream come true for me to win a championship and to have so much support.  We had a great season at the Big T with 5 Wins, 10 top 5 (top-3) finishes, and 13 top-10 finishes out of 14 races.

Congratulations to Brad Caddick and crew on their win Thursday night.  It was awesome to see APE power in victory lane.  For me, it was not the way I wanted to end the final points race.  Race # 14 broke our top-10 streak.  I believe in karma and I’m going to be fairly kind as I write about Thursday night.  I started the race in a good position but had a little trouble shifting on the start and fell back a bit while a few other drivers made some aggressive moves to charge to the front.  I had some room to make up and was behind a tight pack of cars when I had a run coming off of two and moved to the inside to make a pass.  The car I was inside of came down due to a chain reaction and got into me enough to send me around.  It was a racing incident, no big deal, and I had to restart at the tail end of the field with 11 laps on the board.  I was working to at least get back into the top-10 to keep my record for the year when I came up on someone who was not at Thompson to race Thursday night.  He gave me the outside lane, even waved me out there, and as I was passing him down the backstretch and into turn three, he never turned left and instead planted my car into the wall, even going so far as going up and over my front fender and into the wall himself.  He was very proud of his actions and was laughing and bragging about the incident in the pit area afterwards.  I have to agree with Bugsy Stevens on this one - straight from the Etiquette section of his book, "... it's not racing to me.  It's stupidity."  Luckily, no other cars were involved, I didn’t get hurt and my finishing position was enough to win the championship.  Yes, Lady Luck was on my side once again.  The team is looking forward to the World Series now and we’ll be back and fast as ever to have some fun at Thompson’s final race of the season.

The championship celebration started shortly after the race in the pit area thanks to the very thoughtful Publicover team.  Thank you soo much!  We continued after the races and it was great seeing everyone having a good time.

Friday found us scrambling a bit to get the SK Light ready for the Fall Final at Stafford.  We ran late working on set-up and made it just in time to get out for the final practice of the day.  We didn’t learn much and the car was not good.  We got to the track early on Saturday, made a change and crossed our fingers for the one practice of the day.  The car felt a lot better.  The heat race was a lot of fun.  The car steered great and I was able to make some moves to get to the lead and take down the heat win.  After struggling with the set-up since we got the car, we were extremely happy and showed that we are in the chase for the championship.  And then, it rained.  As with every cloud, there is a silver lining.  My cast should be off by the rain date of October 28.  It’s going to be a long month!

9/24/06

The support I've received over the past couple of weeks has been incredible.  Thank you for all the emails, posts and best wishes.  I even received a get well soon card from the True Value Modified family signed by all the drivers and officials.  That is awesome.  Again, thank you.  I also must thank Mother Nature for the rain last week.  Yes, a broken wrist hurts but I found out this week that a race car can make it feel better.  Well, at least for 15 or 20 laps. :-)

Thursday at Thompson was a very special night in my racing career.  I never dreamed of having fans (aside from family) that cheer for me and I'm amazed every time by the loudness of the cheers and everyone I see in the stands waving and clapping.  I was blown away when I found out that I had been voted the "Most Popular Mini Stock" driver and I will always treasure the moment and my trophy.  With such an awesome start to the night, I wanted to go out and win just like Jeff Zuidema and Larry Barnett.  But where they got the job done, I finished 10th.  I had a few things working against me with newly installed power steering and a broken wrist but towards the end of the race, I was getting more comfortable with the feel of the car and driving one-handed so we'll be after that win again next week.  I was still smiling as that 10th place finish took off a little bit of pressure for the last points race of the year and the championship.  Just one more week...

Stafford's last points race is also next week - the Fall Final.  I've always loved going to the Fall Final:  the drive there with all the leaves changing color, the crispness in the air, the pit party on the track and the final races to decide champions.  A championship is a full season of races but this year at Stafford, it comes down to just one for the Sk Lights.  There won't be any need for math.  With a FOUR-way tie, yes that is 4, the champion will be the driver who finishes first.  Lady Luck was smiling this past Friday, and we are one of the four.  It was a challenging night but we made it through.  To start the night off, the sk lights were in the back pit area waiting to go out for the heat race when the wall needed to be fixed.  Well, the cast that I have on does not allow me to straighten my arm (the Dr. wanted to wait one more week, darn it), so I could not reach the switch for the fan.  I didn't want to undo my belt to reach forward because I wasn't sure I'd be able to tighten it up enough.  Time comes to go out and the car wouldn't start.  I did get a push and was able to start the heat but a couple laps in, the car died and I coasted on to pit road.  I had to have the car towed in because there was no way I could steer the car with all that tire, one hand and no power steering.  So we charged up the battery and started last in the feature.  I was able to stay out of trouble and was getting more and more comfortable when the caution came out, and then the red flag.  After what happened while waiting for the heat race to start, I knew I needed to get the fan turned off no matter what.  I loosened my belt and turned the power sucker off.  When it was time to go back to yellow, I turned it back on and tightened my belt.  It was enough.  The race went back to green and I was working to catch the 97 when my car started to hesitate coming out of the turns.  I was losing power.  It may sound crazy, but I talk to my girls (my cars).  And Friday night, I repeated the mantra, "just one more lap" over and over, right to the end of the race.  We made it to the checker and then just barely to pit road where I again needed her to be towed in.  We definitely got lucky with that one.  My 9th place finish was enough to keep us in the hunt for the championship.

Russ Perry, in his racing debut with the ARTS # 76 race truck, was abandoned by APE Motorsports on Friday at the Waterford Speedbowl.  He had a race truck, an air tank and a tire pressure gauge.  Good thing his laid-back personality drew in the help of Rumor Racing and Big Ball Motorsports.  Special thanks to those awesome race teams and also to Russ, George and Spencer for working on the truck and getting it ready.  Unfortunately for Russ, after showcasing the truck's speed with his impressive practice runs, bad news came on race-day.  Not only was the racing cancelled due to rain, the truck was sold too.  All is not lost as Russ will get another chance behind the wheel of something.  The truck was purchased by Steve Johnson of Rumor Racing.  Good luck to Bill Leonard as he and Tom Smith will be new additions to the popular ARTS family.

It has been a great season at both Thompson and Stafford and no matter what happens next week, you can bet we're going to have some fun.  APE Motorsports will be celebrating September birthdays and the 2006 season Thursday night after the races at Thompson.  Just look for the fire and hauler in the parking lot and come on over.

9/11/06

The sk light was good in practice on Friday.  Feature time, on the backstretch, there was a lot of shuffling and pushing around and I ended up tagging the wall with my right side tires.  So 20 laps later with a bent wheel and a lower ball joint about to fall out, I finished 9th.  The car may be back on Friday but with a relief driver, dad? :-)

Why would I need a relief driver?  Well, we had a little more fun than usual this week.  I made my debut in a True Value Modified on Sunday, September 10, 2006.  We missed practice and qualifying on Saturday as we were still working on the car to get it race ready.  And it was.  Luckily, we were able to race a consi on Sunday prior to the feature so I had a few laps to see what driving a full tour-type modified at Thompson felt like.  It was incredible.

I started 32nd in the 34 car field and had a blast.  I was able to miss most of the caution cars (thanks to my spotter, thank you Dick!), had to pit to fix the toe once, stayed on the lead lap and made some good passes on the inside and the outside.  With a green-white-checker finish set-up, I was restarting in 10th.  10th!!! :-)  Unfortunately, coming for the white flag, a few cars got together and fluid was put out on the track between three and four.  My tires found it and I went around.  Another car was coming and their tire just clipped my left front and spun the steering wheel hard left.  I still had my hands on the wheel, didn't let go in time and just didn't have the wrist strength to withstand the whip of the wheel and a very unforgiving steering rack.  My left wrist broke.  The race was red-checkered and I was credited with a 14th place finish.

Right now, we're doing some serious rain dancing for this Thursday to keep us in the chase for the mini-stock championship.  We've had a great season and even though I have a broken wrist, driving a True Value modified was an incredible experience and I loved every lap.  Special thanks to all who made the day possible:  Dick, George & Brandon, Joe, Pete, Rich, Russ and Tiger.  And - the TVMRS officials who let me run!

Dad and Norm gave me an awesome car and opportunity and I can't thank them enough.  We're making plans for next year and you can bet there will be more modified racing in our future.  See you at the track!

9/2/06

We started our race week with a heat race win at Thompson on Thursday.  Those who get to the Big T early enough to see heats get to see a mini-mini-feature as there is only one heat for the mini-stocks.  It was an awful race with lots of aggression and damaged equipment.  At one point in the race, I was "helped" into the grass going down the front-stretch and gained some insight on how slick damp grass is and how tricky it can be to get back on the asphalt (sorry all) but was lucky enough not to get hit by my fellow competitors.  A caution came out and I was able to restart in third.  Being a heat race, I was happy to watch the battle in front of me knowing that as long as I was in the top 10 my starting spot was set.  The leaders got together coming off of turn four for the checker and I moved by on the bottom to take the win.  The feature went off much better and running in third, I had the best seat in the house to watch the great side by side battle for the win between Romano and Godbout and had to wait for word over the radio to find out who won.  Congrats Mike!

Tech was quick and we were loaded up and headed home shortly after to get to work on the sk light.  We had some great help and pulled an all-nighter to get the car race ready for Friday night.  After catching a few hours of sleep, we were back to work mounting tires and finishing up.  We were about ready to load when we decided to run the engine a bit to make sure there were no leaks and found out that the battery we fully charged was dead.  So we had to put in a new battery that wasn't the same configuration and we had to make fit.  It took a bit of time and instead of being early to the track, we were late, missing the first practice.  The second practice, I tried to get a feel for the car and it was a lot different from the RE chassis.  I came off the track and the wheels wouldn't turn and just stopped.  Turns out there was something wrong with the left front wheel.  After finding that and playing with the sway bar, I went out for the third practice only to be sent back to my pit stall.  We missed the last practice.  No heat race, so I went out in the feature with a blank slate as to what the car was going to do.  I spent the first half of the race getting used to the car and the second half taking notes to give my crew feedback for next week.  I was able to pass a few cars and came home with another 8th place finish but the car in one piece this week.  We'll take it and get it better for next week.

8/27/06

The mini stock was fast on Thursday and we were able to get a top 10 after pitting on Lap 3 of 15 to fix a fuel leak.  I was back on the track in no time thanks to some awesome help in the pit area.  Thank you, guys!  I restarted 22nd and finished in 8th after the race went green the rest of the way.  Friday at Stafford also found us 8th in the finishing order with the sk light.  If only that was all there was to the story.  The race went green until Lap 19 when the caution came out, setting up a bunch of green, white, checker restarts.  I love restarts and after the first one, I had moved into third only to have the caution come out again.  I restarted in third on the second restart and the front row tangled in turn two with the rest of the field right behind.  I was driven right into them and around with the final “assault” being a hit on the right front.  Well, the car still rolled so I lined up for what would be the final restart.  After taking the green, I eased the car into turn one, it felt okay and I actually passed a few cars.  I drove into turn three and passed another.  I was already back on the throttle to come out of four when the right front tire came off the bead and I became the passenger instead of the driver.  It was a hard hit into the wall.  The car absorbed the impact, the safety equipment did its job and I was able to drop the net quickly to let everyone know I was okay.  As I took the mandatory ride in the ambulance, I looked through the front and saw my car being carried through the infield hammock style and I remembered how, as a little girl, I used to love to see that done and called it “fancy style”.  Well, it still looked fancy but I didn’t love seeing it this time.  We’ll be back for some more racing action on Friday after a week of late nights working on race cars.  Yeah, we love racing!!

8/20/06

There's a lot to write about this week...

First, I'd like to announce that the #76 SK Light has a new sponsor - Cliff Nelson Motorsports.  Thank you Cliff for your support!  It's exactly the right incentive to get us back to the podium at Stafford.

We began our racing early this past week with the Tuesday night special show at Stafford that included the ARTS Truck Series.  A big thank you goes out to the #7 Hooters team for getting the truck up to "code" for us.  The truck was dropped off on Monday night so we could look it over and make sure I could reach the pedals and the steering wheel.  Norm and Dick Mills found a few changes that they wanted to make and we headed to Stafford with hopes of being able to finish in the top 10.  I had never driven the truck or anything like it but after turning the fourth fastest time in my first practice, excitement started to build.  Dick and Norm kept tweaking and from our third practice on, we were the fastest truck on the track.  I started 16th in the feature (rookies start last - ARTS rule) with an encouraging spotter (thank you Dick!) and raced my way up to 5th in a green to checker race.  It felt like magic.  With a few laps to go, I had caught 4th and 3rd but the left front started going flat and I finished in 5th.  After tech, which we also got to particpate in, the official finish placed us 3rd.  It was an incredible race and a lot of fun.  Special thanks to Dick Mills.  His knowledge and input on the truck gave us a huge advantage.

With the momentum from Tuesday, I had a lot of confidence going to Thompson on Thursday.  The mini stock needed a few tweaks during practice and was in winning trim for the feature.  There were a few cautions to slow the event but I stayed out of trouble and raced hard to get to the lead.  Three-wide, outside, inside, it didn't matter.  The car was hooked up and I had a blast getting to the front for win # 5.  It's the best feeling in the world to go to the track with a car that can win every race.  Thank you Norm, you're awesome.

Back to Stafford on Friday with the sk light.  Lap one of the feature almost reached out and bit me but I was able to swerve around a car against the wall on the front-stretch coming out of turn four.  I did knock the right front in a later skirmish but was able to keep the car straight and cross the line in 8th.  We found a few things on the car that need to be changed and are looking forward to coming back strong next Friday.

8/6/06

This week it's all about Norm!  Unofficial results had us in 2nd after the mini stock race at Thompson Thursday night and then Norm got to shine.  Tech included taking the oil pan off and for us, that meant pulling the engine out.  Use an engine crane?  Nah, not this crew.  These tough guys (with some help - THANK YOU Jack, Rick and Brad) had the engine on the ground and ready for inspection without too much delay.  While getting ready to load up, tech was continued and further tear down was required.  Norm, dad and Bob were working hard and missed watching all the other divisions race.  At the end of the night though, they didn't seem to mind.  Tech is part of the game and Thursday night, Norm Perry of Ashaway Performance Engines won.

I'm sure Rick will be back strong next week and looking for win #5.  I'm looking forward to racing with him like we have all season.  I was bit by tech last year and I know how it feels as well as how I wanted to come back strong and get that next win.

Stafford on Friday night was a bit of a challenge.  Since the summer's been heating up, we haven't hit on the right set-up.  We were able to finish in 7th on the track with a straight race car and a few more ideas to make it better for next week.

The True Value Series was at Beech Ridge on Saturday.  Too much of a haul for us as dad needed to stay close to home to take care of grandma (Butch's mom).  Norm and I made it over to Waterford and couldn't have asked for a better night.  APE powered racers Rich Brooks #65 Mini Stock and Joe Curioso #38 Sportsman both made it to victory lane.  Both these teams work hard and it was great to see their teamwork and determination pay off with a win.  In other news, Chris Correll in the # 76 ARTS Truck finished 6th or 7th up at the Catskill Mountain Speedway.  Not bad for a truck that has sat around for a few years.  Glad it was on hand for the championship chasing Hooters #7 team and good job and big thanks to those guys getting it back on the track.

I am so proud of my brother.  He is amazing.  Just to let you in on some inside information, Norm has a degenerative eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa (check out www.blindness.org for info on RP) and has been classified as legally blind.  He loves building engines, machine work and working on race cars and doesn't allow his limited eyesight to be any limitation.  He builds awesome power and prepares super handling race cars.  Like I said, he is amazing.  So when you see Norm at the track and want to congratulate him on his hard work, grab his hand to shake it because he may not see your hand when you reach out.

7/31/06

Thursday night brought us win # 3 with the mini stock this season.  The night started out with a tough, all in one, no holds barred heat race with the top 10 finishers being handicapped.  I finished 11th, not making the cut.  Turns out my karma was working overtime putting me in the right place for the start of the feature.  A lap ONE accident took out a few good cars.  I restarted 6th and the outside lane worked so well that I was in 3rd by turn one.  Mike Romano in the # 10 was having a great run and we battled side-by-side for a few laps for the top position.  With less than 5 laps to go, I moved out front and held on to win.  We're having an incredible season and are looking forward to a second half just like the first.  The wins are a result of Norm's hard work week after week.  He's always making changes to make the car a little better each week.  Thursday, Aug. 3, marks the date of the mini stock extra distance race.  I can't wait.  Hope to see you all there!

Score: Stafford 9, Rain 6.  Practice went well at Stafford before the skies opened up and poured buckets of water along with thunder and lightning.  After getting loaded up and completely soaked, we actually had the heat on going home, quite a difference from the a/c on the way to the track.  Even though the sk light is ready to run, we'll be working on it again this week to make it just that little bit better.

7/24/06

Two nights of racing, two green to checker races.  What are the odds of that happening? Who knows, but it did.  I thought for sure at Thompson, especially after the mess of a heat race the minis had, that there would be a caution.  Guess I should have stopped and brought it out myself after getting sent around.  Good thing to remember if it happens again.  I was able to get up to 10th after having to chase the field down.  The car is awesome and I can't wait until next Thursday.  We had a good night at Stafford, coming in 5th on track and later bumped to 4th due to a dq of the # 20.  The sk light felt real good.  I think just one caution and we'd have had a top 3.  We'll have to wait and see what happens Friday.  First though, we'll be checking out some modified action happening on Wednesday at Seekonk.

7/16/06

We enjoyed the ride to Thompson on Wednesday and our dinner at the clubhouse after the program was postponed due to rain.  We did get one practice in and the car felt pretty good.  We got to the track on time Thursday to make the first practice and I was on the back pit road waiting to go out when...the car stalled and would not re-fire.  I had planned to walk through the PASS part of the pits later but instead got to steer through as I was pushed by the tow truck back to my pit.  Evidently, race cars need fuel to run.  Yes, I ran it out.  I was happy to hear it was an empty fuel cell since it was a quick fix.  I made it out for the second practice and encountered another issue...the exhaust fell and was dragging as I came off the track.  Again it was an easy fix, but not an encouraging start to the night.  It got better though.  A lot better.  I started in 8th and was able to chase the #51 of Scott M. to the front.  Scott is getting faster every week and I knew that to get by, I would have to carry some momentum and make a pass quickly to avoid staying side by side for too long.  Once in the lead, I was hoping there wouldn't be any cautions.  But after driving into turn three, losing grip on the slicked up track and looking at the wall, I was wondering - where the heck was the yellow flag?  The yellow then came out, setting up a single file restart with four laps to go.  Coming for the green, I picked my starting mark and went.  Scott's really good on restarts so I knew I couldn't make any mistakes.  We finished one, two but missing our top three regular and three time winner, the #66 of Rick Blanchard who had trouble early in the race and had to come from the back for a fourth place finish.  Randy Jurcik. was back with a fast #96 and took down third and Andy Publicover in the #9 crossed the line in fifth.

I was excited about winning and made it to victory lane ASAP to celebrate.  I wish everyone could experience a feature win, its such a darn good feeling.  Making the night extra special was Nextel Fan guest and former modified racer, Jimmy Spencer.  We were in tech and I was joking around with my dad and Norm asking them, "do you think Jimmy Spencer saw the race?"  He did!  I missed the PASS pre-race interviews with him and Kenny Wallace but my mom filmed it and a lot of guys in the pit area told me about it.  Spencer said, "I'll tell you something, I'm impressed with that girl that won this race, you see now, it takes a lot to impress me and she ran a heck of a race so I'm going to meet her later."  And he did!  I got to meet him out in the PASS pits and I'll tell you something, I'm going to do what he told me to do...go modified racing. :-)  Mr. Excitement also knows that a driver is only as good as the car they drive and congratulated Norm on the way the car was hooked up and handling.  Some awesome memories were made on Thursday, July 13, 2006.

In the SK Light at Stafford Friday night, I got stuck on the high side during the feature which is where I usually like to run.  But, the high groove only works if you don't have someone holding you up.  With a line of cars inside and no room to get down, backwards I went.  Oh well.  Luckily we had a restart with four laps to go.  And then another after I slipped in the speedy-dry laid down on the track in turns one and two.  Fortunately, the car that didn't get around me hit my front bumper and not my front tire.  So, I restarted in 10th (and then 8th after a recalled start) and was able to get to 5th by the checker.  Burr won followed by Matthews, Matteson, and Place.  So a top 5 and a straight car - we'll call it a good night and a happy ending for an awesome week.

Next up for APE Motorsports is the True Value Mod race at Lee on Tuesday and then back to Thompson and Stafford as always.

7/9/06

This past week was hectic and we're going to have the same this week.  We survived an extra night of racing on the 4th with a 4th in the SK Light.  Fireworks were a bonus.  Thursday brought a 2nd with the mini stock and Friday repeated Tuesday's finish with another 4th.  Very lucky to finish on Friday.  After pulling the right front apart this weekend to check it over, we found that the shock end had popped off the mono-ball and the shock was only being held in by a bent part trapping it.  All fixed now and I can't wait until Friday.  But before getting back to Stafford, we'll be at Thompson on Wednesday.  Talk about short time off.  It almost feels like New Smyrna!  Next TV Mod race for APE Motorsports will be on Tuesday, 7/18 at Lee USA Speedway.

7/2/06

Short write-up this week.  We have some work to do to get ready for the upcoming week.  Thursday at Thompson brought us another 3rd place finish, 10" out of 2nd.  Friday at Stafford, I started 10th, moved up to 3rd and finished 7th.  While running in 3rd, I drove into one and asked a little too much from my tires.  I might have been okay, but with speedy dry on the track, the tires just couldn't hold.  No excuses though.  I drove it in there, lost my momentum and lost positions.  No worries, car is in one piece, still fast and we'll be back at the track on Tuesday to have some more fun.  That's right, Tuesday at Stafford for the make-up of the CT Classic 150.  Saturday at Monadnock brought a headache in the form of electrical problems on the True Value Mod.  Butch's heat race was cut short when the car shut off.  The crew was unable to get the car running for the consi so the night ended with a view from the main grandstands.  Next up for TV Mods is Lee on Friday night.  We'll be missing this event in favor of running at Stafford.

6/24/06

Thursday - The start of the weekend for APE Motorsports.  Thompson was able to get the show in and despite forecasts of the wet stuff, it was a beautiful night.  Once again, the mini stocks had heat races and we put ours to good use to feel out the car, taking down a 3rd place finish.  Feature time had me starting in the 12th position with a lot of traffic to work through.  There was great racing all through the pack with many 3-wide battles.  I was able to work my way into 3rd with 3 laps to go.  With all that APE power, I was able to reel in 2nd and take a look on the outside to pass on the white flag lap.  Scott M. in the # 51 is one wily competitor and was able to keep me behind him this week.  Congrats to Rick B. in the #66, taking down his first win of the season.  I settled for 3rd with the car in one piece after an exciting race.

Score: Stafford 4, Rain 5  I'll have to see if there's a record of how many rain-outs a track has had in one season.  Rain was also the winner of the True Value Mod race at Star Speedway.  At least we didn't leave for NH before they called it.  Next up for the TV Mods is Monadnock on 7/1.

6/18/06

This week officially started APE Motorsports silly season.  No, no driver changes.  Just lots of racing.  Thompson's first Thursday night show kicked off the weekend for us.  We made it in time for practice and after not having the mini out for over two months, it felt really slow.  I was comparing it to my sk light and thought we might be way off.  With 30 cars signed in, qualifying in the top tier became extremely important.  I started 12th in the heat and was able to get to 3rd.  Norm was disappointed when I wouldnt let him change anything after the heat.  So that gave me an 11th place starting position with a lot of great cars starting ahead of me.  Traffic was tough but once it was all sorted out I was able to start making some moves and worked my way up to 3rd.  After a great side-by-side battle with the #66 of Rick Blanchard that lasted a few laps, I was able to get the edge on the inside.  With time running out, I moved inside of the fast # 51 of Scott Michalski in turn one to grab the lead and the win.  It was great to be back at Thompson to see everyone again.  I can't believe how many people cheer for me at Thompson and Stafford - it's awesome.  Thank you.

Friday night at Stafford was HOT!  The track was slick and the Busch cars were laying down some rubber that felt funky.  I started 6th in the feature and it was an exciting one.  The initial start saw the #70 of Brit Anderson have a problem with the transmission and I got into him a little, shortening the front bumper.  I was chasing the # 15 of Wade Matteson for most of the race.  There was one lap where with the sun just on the horizon, I completely missed my mark going into turn one but was able to keep it off the wall.  (Next investment will be for a tinted visor.)  I had some luck when a caution came out for the # 21 of Phil Balmer with a few laps to go.  I restarted in 4th and fought hard in the outside groove.  There wasn't an inch of room to spare on the outside and I ended up tagging the wall with the right front wheel coming for the white flag.  I kept my foot in it and drove down into one.  I didn't know it at the time but after watching the video, we were three-wide for third coming off of two on the final lap.  I was on the outside and able to get into turn three first and held on for third at the checker.  Congrats to the #29 of Chris Matthews on his win and the #97 of Duke Place on his 2nd place finish.  For me, it was a wild one.  Front bumper $50, ball joint $60, wheel $100, finishing 3rd at Stafford:  Priceless.

Saturday night at Waterford was WET!  The True Value Mods were in town and you have to appreciate how Waterford got the show in for them as many of these teams come from way up north.  Butch was excited as Waterford is like a home-track for us and we had a 4th place starting spot for the heat race.  Unfortunately, the spring-bar style radius arm broke during pace laps for the heat and Butch was forced into the pit area for repairs.  After a 2 hour rain delay, the mini stocks hit the track for their feature followed by the TV Mods consis.  Butch was in the 2nd consi and survived a few cautions until the last restart.  He restarted in 3rd and lost the inside lane when the car in 4th jumped the start.  He was racing to get 3rd back when he made an inside move only to have the outside car come down on him.  He got on the brakes and with the track being slick, got up into the outside car bringing out the final caution and a yellow checker finish.  We were disappointed about not making the show but happy that the car was working well enough to have made a run for it.  43 cars attempted to make it, with only 26 qualifying for the feature.  Next stop for True Value is Star Speedway.

6/11/06

Score: Thompson 1, Rain 1.  Thompson cancelled early on Thursday and after having four weeks off from racing, we weren't going to take it anymore.  Dad suggested practice.  We called Waterford and found out they were still on.  We had a car loaded by 4:15pm and arrived to a light mist.  We didn't give up, paid our $40 and pulled into the pit area.  By the time we were unloaded and all warmed up, the mist had stopped and the track was good so we were able to take the edge off before Friday night at Stafford.

Score: Stafford 3, Rain 4.  Stafford's catching up... Wasn't too sure if they'd get it in, especially as we were caught in a downpour on the way to the track.  But the weather held off until the end of the night.  I didn't set the world on fire during the first practice so a change was needed.  Well, Norm hit on something for the 2nd practice.  The car felt really good and looked good.  After getting fuel, we checked out the lap times up on the board.  Norm waited patiently for me to read off the times.  After I read off a couple, Norm asks "so Matthews was first?"  It was awesome to be able to say "no, we were".  The heat went green to checker and after a slow initial start on my part, I was able to chase down the 14 by the end of the race but not in time to attempt a pass.  The 15 was hot behind me in third.  We were pretty happy and looking forward to feature time.  I started the feature in 6th and gained a few spots through luck early in the race that brought out a caution.  I restarted 4th and moved by the 20 on the outside, the 29 had slowed and I moved into 2nd to begin the chase for the lead.  The 34 was fast and had the bottom line covered so I began to work the outside.  I had no idea how many laps were left at that point and I was just hoping I would have enough time to get it done.  I never saw the halfway signal and after I finally made the pass, I just kept hitting my marks, looking forward and letting myself just drive the car until I saw that checkered flag.  We won our first SK Light 20 lap feature at Stafford Motor Speedway on June 9, 2006.  Victory lane was incredible, even with slipping off the nerf bar (I landed on my feet) and forgetting all the thanks I always planned to say when I won.  So at the risk of sounding like a broken record like some of those cup drivers do, I'm going to list the rest of what I meant to say here...Thank you Stafford and the Arutes for adding the SK Lights to your family.  This division is awesome.  Also have to thank Bosch Platinum Sparkplugs and Sunoco Race Fuels - first place every race for their support of the division,  American Race Tires - week three and still strong, Transmission Clinic and MY MOM.  Thanks for everything.

Next up is a busy weekend:  Thompson on Thursday, Stafford on Friday and Waterford on Saturday with the True Value Mods.

6/3/06

Score: Stafford 2, Rain 4.  Rain became the feature winner at Seekonk and Waterford as well this weekend.  Hopefully this will be end of the wet season and we'll have some nice dry weather for a while.  At least it will be a shorter wait for some action with Thompson starting their TNTT program this Thursday.

5/29/06

Score: Stafford 2, Rain 3.  #76 SK Light Mod - When I signed the car in and saw the "green screen", I figured we wouldn't be racing.  We ended up back at the shop working on the #76 True Value Mod for "the dog".

We've been struggling at Monadnock with the setup.  We hit on something Saturday night, just not in time to make the show.  After 7 spring changes and a sway bar change, Butch was able to put the nose of the car where he wanted.  It made for an exciting consi race.  Racing action and cautions just didn't fall our way.  The car count is up in TVMRS this year and qualifying is tough.  Next race is Seekonk, one of Butch's favorites on the schedule.

APE Powered Updates:

  • Congratulations to Kyle James and Team #21 Mini Stock on their 2nd place finish at the Speedbowl Saturday night.
  • Rich Brooks and Big Ball Motorsports #65 Mini Stock have 1 feature win and 4 top 5 finishes.  Bad break this past week - wrong place at the wrong time.  Currently 4th in points.
  • Joe Curioso and Team #38 Sportsman have finished in the top 5 since the season started and is currently sitting 2nd in points.

Score: Stafford 2, Rain 2.  #76 SK Light Mod - Well, I'll admit I was very wary of the track during the first round of practice with the way the sprinkles were coming and going so I took it real easy.  I was on the throttle more during the second practice and found the car a twitch loose so we made some adjustments and were ready to go for the heat.  Not quite sure what happened up front on the start of the heat race, just a mess of cars involved in a Lap 0, turn 1 incident, including me. Repairs were quickly underway on the right front suspension with no doubt that we'd be good for the feature when the skies opened up and extinguished the racing program for the evening.

#76 True Value Mod - Similar situation with dodging sprinkles and trying to get the race in at Lee USA Speedway.  I was impressed with the effort put forth to keep the track in shape, especially the way the pace car for the ACT cars was flying around the track.  Modifieds hit the track for their heats with the sprinkles still coming down.  Heats 1 and 2 were asked to ride around and keep the track dry until the sprinkles let up.  Heat 1 got started but was yellow checkered on lap 4 or 5 with only 6 cars left (not due to track conditions).  Heat 2 went out and Butch was a little loose getting into turn 1 on lap 2, going around in the grass.  There were a few cautions during his heat and with 3 or 4 laps to go, there was a problem with the ignition.  Butch was able to finish the heat and it turns out the fuel calculation may have been a little off.  Yup, he ran out of gas.  Sprinkles started again and after a car going around on the initial start for Heat 3, the rain really started coming down.  The race was rescheduled and we were again beaten by mother nature.

Stafford was kind and cancelled a day early saving us the question of are they or aren't they.  Although, it would have been obvious by Friday afternoon that yes, it was raining and no, they aren't racing.  APE Motorsports saw a little action this week.  We took the SK Light Mod over to Waterford for practice on Thursday.  We planned to get some track time and test some changes.  We got one practice in and the car had a push going through the center of the corner.  We made some adjustments and went out for round two.  After a nice slow lap where I checked to make sure the track had some grip, I shifted into high gear, rounded turn 3 and didn't make it out of turn 4.  There was a wall in the way.  The mist had picked up that quick and with the slick tires, there was no grip.  Damage wasn't too bad - bent the right front wheel and ball joint but the tire is ok.  Oh well.  That's why we don't race in the rain!

Stafford - Friday Night Opener

# 76 SK Light Mod - 2nd place finish.  Wow, was I lucky to get a caution with only a few laps to go.  The car was on the loose side but I was able to hold on and really charge at the end of the race.  It was a lot of fun and really exciting to be passing in the outside groove at Stafford.  Definitely a move I won't ever forget (and will try many more times).  I watched the video playback and have to say I really need to work on my restarts.  I lost a lot of ground and with the cars being so equal, it's tough to make it up.

Canaan Fair Speedway - 5/6/06

# 76 True Value Mod - The driver decided to sit this one out.  Next up for the True Value Series is Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, May 21.  The race was switched from Friday to Sunday due to lighting issues at Lee.  Lucky break for APE Motorsports - one conflicting race date taken care of.

5/2/06

Stafford Spring Sizzler

# 76 SK Light Mod - 4th place finish.  In true Perry fashion, we pulled in a little late on Friday and was only able to take advantage of one practice session.  To make it more challenging, we had the right front tire on the right rear and vice versa.  What a relief to realize that was why the car was pushing so bad.  We made it to the track on time for Saturday and got another practice in.  We picked up a second from the night before and made a few adjustments for the heat race.  The start for the heat race was a little messed up.  I guess some drivers weren't ready to go or radios weren't working.  But it went green and I was able to get up to 6th.  We were pretty happy after the heat race.  The transponder had us 2nd fastest.  I started 10th in the feature and was able to avoid a few tangled cars and raced up to 4th place.  I had made a pass for 3rd then the yellow came out before we got a lap in.  Restarted in 4th place and I was still on the gas when the car in front of me shifted, a little bit of contact, but then we got going.  We chased down the 2nd place car and he was able to get by for 2nd.  I was on the inside for 3rd and ended up mowing some grass off the back stretch and then having to chase him down again.  Another caution came out with 2 laps to go.  Restart was a lot better but I drove in a little too deep in turn one and lost the side-by-side advantage I'd had.  On the last lap, I was able to get a run on the inside off of turn four but it wasn't enough to get me to 3rd.  It was a lot of fun.  I think the sk light division is awesome and we're going to have some great racing this year.  Hope to see you there!

Monadnock Results from 4/15

# 76 True Value Mod - Failed to qualify for the feature.  Problem with the fuel pick-up during the consi caused the car to shut off and Butch had to park it in the infield.  The car looked good and wasn't too far off but being late and not getting practice put us a little behind.  Next race for TVMRS is Canaan on 5/6/06.

Next up for APE Motorsports - Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway Friday 4/28 thru Sunday 4/30.  Debut of the SK Light division.

4/10/06

Thompson Ice Breaker

# 76 Mini Stock - 2nd place finish.  It was a quick 15 laps with the race going green to checker.  The # 5 of Brian Vincent was fast and beat me on the start so I had to play catch up the rest of the race.  I was there, just not able to get a run on him with the laps counting down and the lapped traffic picking up.  Good race and not a bad way to start the season.  June seems so far away...

Waterford Bud Nationals Results

APE Powered Racers with a good start on the 2006 Season

# 65 Mini Stock, Rich Brooks - 3rd place

# 38 Sportsman, Joe Curioso - 4th place

Next up for APE Motorsports - True Value Modified Racing Series at Monadnock on Saturday, April 15.

3/2/06

New Smyrna Speedway, FL
Highlights
* We had fun.
* We were at the track ten consecutive days.  (Talk about getting a racing fix during winter!)
* We started every race.
* I learned something every race.
* The last night of time trialing was the best time (Night 1 we were 1.2 seconds off the pole, Night 9 we cut that to 0.5 seconds off the pole)
* We finished 6 out of 7 races (I should have voted for a 30 lap feature for the last night but I wanted 50 laps for the seat time.)

Lowlights
* Hitting the wall on practice day...and Night 1...and Night 9
* Getting hit on the driver's side
* The bucket of "shame"  (well, not everything fit into the bucket)
* Cold nights!!!!

Big thanks to my brother.  Norm is the driving force behind APE Motorsports.  Without his hard work and dedication, there wouldn't be an APE Motorsports team.  I can't thank him enough for all that he has done and continues to do.

Thank you to everyone who helped out on the car getting it ready and at the track.

The car needed some work and we had some late nights during the weeks prior to leaving.  Not everyone knows this, but APE Motorsports is a small team.  There is my brother Norm (the man who does everything), my father Butch, friends and family that help out when they can (Joe A., Joe A. Sr., George, Paul and Bob, Russ and Spencer) and myself.  The car was finished just in time to load into the trailer for the trip south.

New Smyrna was a great chance for me to get some seat time in an SK to see if I liked an open-wheel car before the season begins.  I loved it and am looking forward to driving an SK Light at Stafford on Friday nights.  I will still be racing the mini stock at Thompson on Thursdays and you'll also see me listed on the Sunoco Mods roster.  We intend to run 4 races towards the end of the 2006 season.

It was great talking to everyone that stopped by and I look forward to seeing you all again.

See you at the track!

Shelly

New Smyrna Speedway, FL

#76 SK Mod - We survived 9 nights of racing on the high banked 1/2 mile oval.  What an awesome week.  Had some ups and downs and lots of fun.  Time trials?  I'd rather run heats any day.  It was a great learning experience and a great track.  Finishes - Night 1 (12th), Night 2 (RAIN), Night 3 (No Mods), Night 4 (12th), Night 5 (9th), Night 6 (11th), Night 7 (8th), Night 8 (8th) and Night 9 (7th).
